SUMMARY:A Country Churchyard
DESCRIPTION:The West Meredith Cemetery is an historic cemetery in West Meredith that was affiliated with the Baptist Church which once stood beside it.  Listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, it is the burial ground for many of Meredith’s earliest settlers. \nIn 1954\, Edith M. Preston visited the West Meredith Cemetery and was so moved by what she observed that she wrote a poignant essay about it titled\, “A Country Churchyard” that was published in the November/December 1954 issue of the Courier magazine\, and will be presented in this program. \nWritten in beautiful prose\, she describes what she saw and felt as she walked through the cemetery\, such as\, “The winds blow softly over the graves.  It is quiet here in the country churchyard.”
