Bert Santora’s Memories of Growing Up in Houghtaling Hollow in the 1920s
August 8 @ 7:00 pm
Joseph’s son, Bert Santora, was born in Patterson, NJ, in 1912 and moved with his family to a farm on Houghtaling Hollow in 1917 where he attended the District 17 School and the A. L. Kellogg School in Treadwell, where he graduated in 1931. He then attended the Oneonta Normal School, graduating in 1935, after which, he taught in the District 17 School for 4 years while attending Columbia University during the summer, working toward a BS degree.
In 1999, he wrote about what his life was like growing up in Houghtaling Hollow. He writes of a time when the folks there were a close-knit community that worked and played together and depended heavily on one another.
