The Cemetery Lovers: What They Do and What They’ve Found in Old Cemeteries

by Dale and Tina Utter
Dale and Tina Utter, who refer to themselves as “Cemetery Lovers,” are well-known in this region for their restoration work in old cemeteries. You may have read their column in the Walton Reporter. They are also helping us restore the Meredith Square Cemetery.
They’ll begin by telling us about the most common gravestone materials they find in old cemeteries, the earliest gravestones they’ve come across, which they call primitives, and then transition into the gravestone carving world by talking about Delaware County’s own carver who they call Fancy D from the 1830s.
They’ll then shift the focus of their presentation to their work with gravestones: cleaning, resetting, repair and researching and conclude by showing us some of their most noteworthy work.
